Pre-Israeli Architecture
Crusader castles and Mamluk architecture in the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
Alpine Urbanization
Analysis, projection of the future, and invention or design alternatives in the Alps.
Epistemology of AGI
I synthesize different fields around the topic of AGI - phenomenonogy, philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and computer science. How might linguistic and perceptual models relate to or constitute the subjectivity of AGI? Maurice Merleau-Ponty, in particular, sees language as fundamentally co-constitutive of our embodied being-in-the world. Such a view might shed light on how machine intelligence might necessarily reflect its particular physical (or virtual) linguistic form. The qualitative shape of AGI consciousness would be dependent on its linguistic form. Language forms the phenomenal body” of artificial intelligence. I analyze Psi-theory in relation to language and intention. Is it actually impossible to abstract a “general” intelligence from the particularities of human embodiment and culture? Would the general intelligence of a computer be radically different but no less “intelligent” than a human brain?
Frequency Ratios of Given Names in Target Population to Total Population
Co-contributors: Hanna Jonsdottir, Jason Chen
Web page that displays the most overrepresented given names by US state of birth, sex, birth year, and race.
Programming Languages’ Lexical Similarity
Co-contributors: Jake Sigman, Kevin Liang
Lexical similarity is an attribute of pairs of languages used in linguistics. It is a method to compare traditional spoken languages. We can use this for programming languages as well.
Cheat Sheet
Cheat Sheet is a well-documented collection of templates for common data structures and algorithms to be used for competitive programming.
Self-Driving Car Simulator
I developed a model based on a dataset of millions of data points that tells us how much each life is worth based on a subject’s species, age, gender, criminal record, social status, pregnancy status, fitness level, and whether the subject is breaking the law (e.g., jaywalking) to use in life-or-death situations where a self-driving vehicle must value one set of lives over another. I wrote a Selenium script that automates simulations based on this model. I ran thousands of simulations on MIT’s Moral Machine, wrote the results to a CSV file, and analyzed them in Excel. I presented this project at the Recurse Center in September 2016.
Ethical Engineering
I talked about the process of constructing ethical frameworks for autonomous machines at the Recurse Center in August 2016.
Watersports Dock Rehabilitation
Co-authors: Daniel Molinaro, Jake Hughe, Amanda Yuan, Isha Patel
Alpha Group drafted a plan to rehabilitate a watersports dock in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic by replacing the concrete and bench, constructing a dock, installing stairs and a ramp, and using a concrete sealer.
Flying Dutchman
I drafted a three-view hand drawing and AutoCAD drawing of the Flying Dutchman, a former Olympic-class sailboat, from a table of molded offsets.
Open-Source Laser Cutter
Co-contributors: Calvin Ball, et al.
Advisor: Dr. Eric Lima
We combined a laser cutter and a CNC milling machine to achieve the functional goal of cutting thin woods and plastics.
Assessing Gait Impairment Following Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury in Mice
Co-authors: Dr. Melanie Neumann, Dr. Yonggang Wang, Sharon Kim, Shwuhey M. Hong, Dr. Mehmet Bilgen, Dr. Jialing Liu
Journal of Neuroscience Methods, 2009
To determine the effect of traumatic brain injury on gait function in adult mice, we assessed gait changes following the unilaterally controlled cortical impact using a computer-assisted automated gait analysis system.
